PDX: The New Oasis of Air Travel

Relax Before and After the Cramped Tube in the Sky

In September 2021, Travel+Leisure magazine announced their 2021 World's Best Awards. Portland International Airport (PDX) was the number one spot in the Top 10 Domestic Airports.  As a regular business traveler, I was so happy to depart and return via PDX. The thoughtful layout, design, and amenities made business jaunts bearable.

On August 14, 2024 Portland International Airport unveiled  a decades-long renovation of it main airport terminal. The beauty of this renovation is awe inspiring! It is as if a fantastical future fantasy has been brought to life. During departures, It truly allows one to relax prior to entering the newly designed TSA screenings and trek to the gates. Upon arrival, one can feel a sense of freedom from the cramped aluminum tube in the sky into an expansive space where one can physically and psychically relax. The cavernous space of the main terminal and its shops and restaurants make extended layovers a joy.

and I visited the new PDX to take in the indoor forest, the 9-acre wood-beamed ceilings, skylights, and bleacher-style seating areas to have a beer and munchies on the mezzanine. We found a table overlooking the space. Here are some photos to give you an idea of what it's like. Enjoy!
